Christian enjoys the outdoors and hard labor, and our AmeriCorps program incorporates both these things. Christian heard about our program from a friend, and needless to say, he has been here ever since. When asked about the most important thing in his life right now, he quickly replied, “Heart of Oregon Corps, where I am serving in my third AmeriCorps term. This experience has given me so much in my life. It helped me through school and has given me so many skills. It has helped me meet a lot of people. This is the best time of my early years.”
Christian was a shy person before coming to Heart of Oregon. When he first started high school in Central Oregon, he didn’t know anyone and was afraid to talk to new people. Thankfully, he said, that has changed. “Now, I describe my personality as adventurous, confident, caregiving, and friendly.” Christian wants to be a police officer, saying, “I really like helping people. I am helping my community right now in AmeriCorps and would like to do that with more authority. I am thankful to HOC AmeriCorps for providing me the resources to continue my education.” Christian plans to use his AmeriCorps education awards to complete community college with a two-year degree, then attend classes at the Oregon police academy, and in time become an officer of the law.
