Four years ago, Felipe was skipping classes, getting behind in school, and hanging around the wrong crowd. Traditional high school just wasn't working for him. Then, he joined Heart of Oregon's YouthBuild program. He worked hard to earn his GED and bring his school attendance up to 99%, all while learning construction job skills through building affordable homes. After graduating YouthBuild, he stuck with us and joined a Stewardship crew. Again he worked for success, and left that program with the confidence to live a substance free lifestyle, a $1,500 college scholarship, and a high school diploma. Last year, Felipe gained full-time employment as a Wood Grader working at JELD-WEN, (a member of Heart of Oregon Corps’ Employer Advisory Council). Felipe has come a long way, overcoming several life barriers with the support of Heart of Oregon Corps staff and employment at JELD-WEN. He is an inspiration to all of us here at Heart of Oregon, symbolizing what is possible through our programs.
